Now I’m to talk on the scope, prospects, and career of microbiology…
I would like to start by letting you guys know that majority of the people studying the course are actually tagged “wounded doctors”. Why? Because we all saw microbiology as a back up plan to Medicine and surgery.it might not be you but I mean most. And now the employability of this course with its cousin course “Biochemistry” is been questioned all along that you either end up to become a secondary school teacher or you go for another job totally different from the application of biological science. This is the labour market mentality, though I know it can’t be easily erased but I promise to open you up to new perceptions on Microbiology.

Microbiology as we all know, is basically the study of microorganisms, their complexity, interactions and metabolism. Even though the definition is somewhat deficient to a virologist became of the nature of viruses…..being just an infectious agent.
So the microscopic organisms are divided into three forms
- Single-celled (unicellular)
- Cell colony (multicellular)
- Acellular ( lacking cells)
And other comprehensive introductions… Now to the scope of microbiology.Microbiology is a pivotal field in the advancement of science and technology, because of the use of microorganisms as a tool to unravel so many things about the other higher organisms, how they affect us, their metabolic rate

Talking about the prospects of this course;It is crazily large and enormous. Microbiology is the next big thing if you don’t know, know now and if you don’t believe it, please believe now.

New and advanced approaches are been used in the study of human genomes because remember we microbiologists are humans so we are to study the microorganisms for our own benefit. Microorganisms are been used in bioinformatics, integrative biology, development of organismoids and system biology.
These aforementioned courses are becoming so big in the molecular biology industry right there outside the country, and I know you might want to blame the stale development on our government that we’ve not gotten to this level, I know and I understand you because we are together in this. But if we don’t start in our generation then when?
Even if some Nigerians deem it fit to boast that they’ve not been to the hospital for any clinical diagnosis or illness before but none can boast on the fact that they don’t eat….food is essential to life, we all know that, hope we’ve all eaten? Before I continue.

Now, we all know that foods undergo spoilage here and there, though we are been thought that spoilage is a subjective quality which is so true in this part of the world but this same organisms that spoil our food, ferment them for our purpose. So what’s up with fermented foods? Fermented foods and drinks is another cheap avenue to which we can invest our acquired knowledge and little income to fetch us a massive outcome making us a micropreneur
Not to waste our time, let me move on to career opportunities:
You can work in the medical field, public health, agricultural, industrial, marine, food, and so on.
Importantly, viral diseases are emerging and reemerging in Nigeria…the recent outbreak of Ebola and Lassa fever virus is a pin-pointer of the presence of this part infectious agent in our midst…..then how do we prepare for future outbreaks? You and I should venture into the field of Virology….not all but some because we can’t be at the same place. And this diseases I believe can only be solved by ourselves.
Conclusively, the rate at which productivity and availability of farm produce are reducing indicates that in the nearest future we might succumb to eating microorganisms??…..even as our population is flying high.

Speaker Victor: Microbiology: Career, Scope and Prospect.
But as prospective Microbiologist, the question should not be, “what can Microbiology offer me? “, but rather, What can I offer Microbiology?
I believe we all here are rather studying this course either by choice or the other way round. But the truth is, Microbiology has been a field of study before anyone of us exists, and it has produced so many great scientists such as Louis Pasteur, Maurice Hilleman, Daniel Nathans amongst others. But these people didn’t question what Microbiology could offer them as a field, but what they could offer to in a bit simplify its complexity
Mostly in this part of world, the field might be underestimated because of the mentality we all carry around about it
But as the first speaker said, Microbiology is the next big thing, or rather let me say, It is the big thing now!
As it were before Agriculture then Engineering then Medicine, now Microbiology has come to stay.
I would be talking most about the prospects of this field… Its a fact, Microorganisms are everywhere and we are nowhere near discovering them all. But in a world of revolving and evolving microorganisms, it also needs an evolution of Microbiologist to take up this tasks.
There are certain skills as microbiologist you need to attain to be able to stand among others;
- Communication skills -This is very crucial in the field of science, ability to communicate inferences and to other bodies
- Computer skills.. not just to see movies and play games, there are some apps on the Computer that are very important in science
- Creativity & Thinking- Ability to fashion out new methods and procedures that cud probably give better results in a short period of time
- Perseverance & Resilence -this is actually very scarce amongst people nowadays, but as scientist, you must be able to tolerate failure and so many ups and downs
- Emotional Intelligence- ability not to allow your emotions close your judgement.
- Problem solving
- managing ambiguity
- Team management & Teamwork
- Time management.
As the population of the world increases without limits, lol, there is an increase in pollution in the world. Now, people are sorting for new ways to reduce pollution; Now, Microorganisms are used..either as whole or certain enzymes are from them are used
Let’s go to the medical field: We are in a world of emerging-and-reemerging-infectious-diseases, like Ebola, Dengue fever, and new Types of malaria are been discovered. The medical field as of now needs more microbiologist than before.
As majority of us know, the antibiotics we use are gotten from this organism, even though some are getting resistant to them daily, the pharmaceuticals world needs people to think and find a way out of these resistant microorganisms so we avoid another Bubonic plaque
in the medical field, there is a crucial need for Virologist and Bacteriologists
As at September 2016, it has been discovered that instead of wasting billions of dollars in the steel industry for extraction of metals.
There has been discovery of Biosorption by microbes
This is not only helping human economically in terms of finance, but the use of Algae has recorded a 84.6% purity of heavy metal been biosorped.
We also have great prospects in the production of leather
Agriculture.. the most fascinating of all, I’m sure a large percent of us here will want to go into Agriculture, but what will make is different from others in the field?
Most of these plants are now been genetically modified and they even will produce pure yield in relatively short time. no more waiting for a year or so to grow cocoa
Agriculture is a field that to talk on might take all night
So,lets quickly discuss about the prospect in the Petroleum sector; Last year, The United State of America released via The Scientists magazine that Rhodococcus spp are now been used as Petroleum Biosensors, which means incorporation of this organism can in a short while tell us where there is presence of Petroleum, unlike how the Azotobacter spp are been used to clean up Petroleum spillage.
neither of these has gotten to use in Nigeria, you could be the one to use it and make money from it
Then we have the Production of Recombinant Proteins, Enzymatic Biocatalysis, another interesting field. Also in Food production

All university students face challenges in school but each department comes up with their different stress system which differs across the universities in Nigeria. To create a unified balance between academics and extra-curricular activities requires yourself. The first thing you need to know or ask yourself is are you balanced? Because you need to be psychological equipped to be able to merge this two phenomenon together. Remember this truth a university is meant for studies, that should be your priority then it will be easier to lift others. Just set your priorities, read far more than you play because you will need to remember what you’ve read not what you did while playing….you know school test your memory not intelligence.

What is the fate of medical microbiologists in the medical world?

Like a lecturer of mine says, what differentiates you from the MLS students is the theoretical aspect of this diseases.
They are formed mostly because of the way things are in Nigeria.
and they are more like Lab technicians.
They Knw well the Agar, stains media etc..
but the field work of the medical world belongs to the microbiologist, putting 2geda the dots of a particular diseases, checking its toxicity&source, classification and identification, these are what Microbiologists do.
Though, sadly only a few places /Hospitals hv necessary equipment for this.

The population is directly proportional to waste generated which leads to the different basic types of pollution, land, air, water. Normally, chemicals have been used in the degradation of this toxicants present in our environment but microorganisms have posed to be a much better tool in the aspect called bioremediation. Whereby this microorganisms through their metabolic activity degrade the wastes and pollutants into less or non toxic forms. We have different classes of microorganisms under this: those that degrades PNPS, nylon etc
